A convertible or cabriolet is an automobile body style that can convert between an open-air mode and an enclosed one, varying in degree and means by model. Although many buyers like to fit hardtops to keep the SUV quieter and better protected from the elements, the Jeep Wrangler comes as standard with a folding soft top — making it the only convertible SUV currently on sale in the U.S. (the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet is deceased and the Range Rover Evoque convertible is still in utero).
Fixed-profile: In contrast to convertibles where the entire bodywork above the beltline (doors, roof, side pillars, side bodywork) is replaced with a folding or retractable roof, the fixed profile convertible retain portions of fixed bodywork including the doors, side pillars and side elements of the roof — while a center fabric portion slides back and accordions at the rear.
Other fixed-profile convertibles include the 1950 Nash Rambler Landau Convertible Coupe, the Nissan Figaro (1991) — as well the 1957 Fiat 500 and its 2007 Fiat 500 successor. What hasn’t changed is that soft-top convertibles remain more susceptible to break-in and theft than hardtop vehicles. The A3 Cabriolet is one of Audi’s more practical premium convertibles but if it’s sportier looks and performance you are after, the TT Roadster is a better fit. Up front it’s perfectly spacious, while the back seats are more useable than other big convertibles.
Like most people, you are probably used to seeing soft top convertibles , but look closely – hard-top convertibles are making their way back after years of being absent from the automotive scene. What separates the Jeep Wrangler from the rest of these convertibles is its breadth of capability.
Infiniti is giving the Q60 lineup the year off while they retool the coupe and, eventually, the convertible; both are are expected to be reintroduced for the 2017 model year. Though some convertibles like the Mazda MX-5 Miata or Smart Fortwo Cabriolet can be affordable, most appeal to luxury car riders and even performance car fans. Those are the states that tend to invest in convertibles most, while Alaska, Wyoming, North Dakota, Montana and Idaho don’t feel it’s particularly necessary to own a car that can’t keep the breeze or rain out for long stretches at a time.
