Flathead Express
Up Specification

In April 2001 we launched a project to produce a drag racing combination which would be fun, cost effective and something a bit different from the vehicles currently drag racing. The answer was a nostalgia style Front Engined Dragster.

Front Engined Dragsters, know these days as FEDs, were the forerunners to the 4 second 300mph top fuel dragsters of today, however they have all but disappeared. In fact a lot of people have not seen a FED in action. The driver sits behind the engine with his/her backside behind the diff and legs draped over the top of the diff to the pedals in front.

The other important issue was what engine to use. The easy way out would have been to put a late model Chev or Ford in the dragster. However, in keeping with the style of the vehicle, we decided that a 1949 8BA Ford Flathead V8 would give it the true nostalgia feel. The flathead (or sidevalve) V8 motor was used in both hot rodding and drag racing at the beginning of time, so it was appropriate we use it in this nostalgia style vehicle.

Although the dragster is a nostalgia vehicle, it has been constructed to comply with latest ANDRA specifications, allowing it to race in the AA/Modified Dragster class at open national events.
